The University of Iowa is seeking a medical physicist for a faculty appointment in Radiation Oncology with a strong interest in contributing to the academic mission. Responsibilities will include clinical service, teaching, and research based on the candidate's interests and qualifications. Appointment would be on the tenure track, the clinical track, or as an associate.
The successful applicant will join thirteen faculty medical physicists, one faculty engineer, two medical physics residents, seven dosimetrists, two systems administrators, and one staff engineer in the Medical Physics Division of the Department of Radiation Oncology. The Department currently has two Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators and one Siemens Oncor linear accelerator. Installation of an Elekta Gamma Knife Icon is currently underway, and the vault renovation for an Elekta MRI Linear Accelerator is in progress with the start of installation scheduled for August 2018.
In addition to the linear accelerators, the Department is equipped with a 3T MAGNETOM Trio MRI scanner, 4-D Siemens Biograph PET/CT scanner, mobile C-arm for fluoroscopy, optical and infra-red non-ionizing image guidance systems, three 6-degree-of-freedom robotic patient positioning systems, and an active and diverse brachytherapy program with MRI guided high-dose-rate brachytherapy, prostate seed implants, and eye plaque implants. The Department provides intra-operative breast radiation therapy using the Zeiss IntraBeam system. Specialized capabilities include 4D imaging/treatment planning/delivery, frame-based and frameless linear accelerator based stereotactic radiosurgery/therapy using cone collimators (to be replaced by Gamma Knife Icon), and flattening filter free stereotactic body radiation therapy with gated 3D-CRT, IMRT, or VMAT. Departmental software includes the Mosaiq oncology information system, Pinnacle treatment planning system, and Epic electronic medical record system. The medical physics group also provides coverage at four partner sites, one with an Elekta VersaHD linear accelerator and three with Varian linear accelerators.
The Department has three divisions: The Radiation Oncology Clinic, Medical Physics, and a Ph.D.-granting Free Radical Radiation Biology division. The Department has a successful research program and has multiple investigators funded with NIH R01 and Phase I STTR grants, and a U01 grant on image-guided cancer therapies. The Department has developed highly productive interdisciplinary collaborations that have resulted in federal research funding in multiple other departments including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Radiology. A successful Ph.D. candidate will be appointed on the tenure track or non-tenure clinical track. A successful M.S.-prepared candidate will be appointed as an Associate. For a tenure or clinical track appointment, this is an open-rank position, with rank determined based on qualifications.
