The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Methodist University Hospital in conjunction with the West Cancer Center and The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) are seeking highly motivated medical physicists for brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy.
We are expanding all our locations: the Methodist University Hospital, the biomedical physics laboratory at University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), and the West Cancer Center.
The Methodist University Hospital, our main campus, is constructing a new tower where radiation oncology will have three new vaults with two new linacs, a dual energy CT simulator, and a MRI-linac. The West Cancer Center, located 30 minutes from the main campus, has all new linacs for external beam radiotherapy and a new dedicated brachytherapy suite. Both facilities are well equipped with the latest medical physics instrumentation and clinical 3D printing capabilities.
The radiation oncology equipment and software environment consists of: Elekta linacs (including Infinity and Versa HD with a Hexapod robotic couch and Brainlab ExacTrac system), Elekta-Nucletron Flexitron HDR afterloaders, Pinnacle, Mosaiq, Oncentra, MIM fusion and data base management, and BrainLab Elements.
There are many opportunities for clinical and research projects. Current departmental research interest are: novel detectors for real-time dosimetry, 3D printing techniques to advance brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy, participation in clinical trials, novel techniques for quality assurance and treatment delivery, MRI guided radiotherapy, dual energy simulation, and development of novel QA and treatment techniques for SBRT/SRS.
At UTHSC the department has designated research laboratories for cell and preclinical micro irradiation, 3D printing and rapid bioengineering prototype development. In support of preclinical trials, our department has a unique new translational research facility for radiobiological studies. This new facility has a dual gantry microCT and micro irradiator for high-resolution image guided preclinical irradiation of cancer murine models and cell assays.
Candidates must have a M.S or Ph.D. degree in medical physics, physics, nuclear sciences, or related physical science discipline. Candidates who completed their residency in a CAMPEP accredited radiotherapeutic medical physics program and ABR certification are highly desired. Priority will be given to candidates with brachytherapy experience. Clinical service will be balanced between: HDR, LDR (prostate and eye plaque), external beam radiation therapy, and SBRT. An academic rank at the UTHSC can be negotiated according to the candidate’s clinical experience and research interest. Competitive salary is offered according to AAPM’s latest national salary survey matching 80% of the national average according to experience and credentials.
The Physicist is responsible for calibration and quality assurance of all radiation therapy equipment; performing calculations and treatment plan dosimetry for patient treatment, verification of patient doses, chart checks and necessary radiation therapy procedures in compliance with the State Regulations for Radiation and Protection. Degree: Required: Master of Science in Medical Physics, Engineering or any other Physical Science. Preferred: PhD
Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in clinical medical physics radiation oncology.
Certification: Therapeutic Radiological Physics license or ABR eligible for Therapeutic Radiological Physics.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of medical physics. Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials, such as technical reports and manuals. Ability to communicate verbally with colleagues, physicians and patients. Ability to work with minimal direct supervision. Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects.
Key Job Responsibilities: Oversees the preparation of computerized treatment plans and the calculations of patient doses with regards to the age specific populations. Develops and maintains a quality assurance program for all Radiation Therapy treatment modalities. Assures accuracy of patient's treatment unit parameters. Directs the construction of shielding blocks, electron cut-outs and immobilization molds and masks. Provides continuing education to radiation therapy staff and students. Assists with calibration of diagnostic radiology equipment. Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.
The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Must have good balance and coordination. The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently. The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading. Frequent non-invasive patient contact. Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
